Alberta Society

for Safe Rigging, Hoisting, and Lifting

About the Initiative

The proposed Alberta Society for Safe Rigging, Hoisting, and Lifting is emerging from the Creative Sentencing Project, Enhancing Safe Work Practices for Hoisting, Rigging, and Lifting Operations, led through the University of Calgary.

This initiative seeks to reduce serious injuries and fatalities by strengthening rigging, hoisting, and lifting practices across Alberta through collaboration, advocacy, and the advancement of shared standards.

Following extensive consultation including approximately 100 meetings and a January 28, 2026 Visioning & Strategizing Event attended by over 110 participants from industry, regulators, training institutions, and safety associations, strong momentum has developed to pursue incorporation of a Society in Alberta

Our Vision

At the Visioning & Strategizing Event, participants identified a shared aspiration:

  • To build a connected Alberta lifting community that bridges gaps between education, standards, and accountability.

  • To advance functional, accepted training and competency standards.

  • To provide a unified voice for safe rigging, hoisting, and lifting practices in Alberta .

The Society would work to guide strategic efforts such as advocacy, promotion, community-building, and advancing a common standard for training, education, and verification of competency
